Biological Terrorism
(Fall 2001)
Our office has received numerous calls requesting antibiotics
or information about anthrax and smallpox in response to the
September 11th events. We are currently abiding by CDC
and public health guidelines and are not filling prescriptions
for prophylactic antibiotics for anthrax.
Please understand that the duration of protection conferred by
antibiotics is short.
If and when there is a bioterrorism event, clinical and public
health evaluation will determine who would benefit from antibiotic
administration. The CDC has a plan for distribution of antibiotics
and/or vaccine through the National Pharmaceutical Stockpile (NPS)
Program.
We do not have access to anthrax or smallpox vaccine.
The ONLY known sources of live smallpox virus are contained in
pharmaceutical facilities: one in the U.S. and one in Russia.
Please see the CDC
bioterrorism web site or go to the specific articles listed
below for further information.
