A Good-Bye Letter from Dr.
Nathanson
Dear Families,
For decades, I have felt like a member
of your own extended family. We all
worked together to keep “our” children
healthy and safe, immunized, potty
trained, and sleeping through the night!
As I take my leave, I know I’ll
miss all of you deeply. Babies, children,
young people and grown-ups, you have
all taught me so much. Many of you
have had to confront challenges that
are truly daunting, and the grace and
steadfastness you have shown move me
deeply. Others of you show that grace
by participating in life to the full,
leading wonderfully rich and active
lives, and teaching your children how
to do the same.
From you I have learned that loving
discipline really works, that older
children thrive when given responsibility
both for themselves and for younger
ones, and that even toddlers can be
compassionate. I have learned how effective
parents (and grandparents) can be when
they take on bureaucracies, and even
the culture itself, on behalf of the
child who needs help.
I have seen you helping each other,
keeping your tempers when everything
is frustrating, laughing wholeheartedly
when one of Our Kids does something
funny, and giving a standing ovation
when one of them steps up to the microphone
and delivers an unforgettable performance.
When my husband, Chuck, was so ill,
you sent me cards that often were signed
or drawn by your children; you also
sent me loving thoughts and prayers.
After he died, three years ago, and
I returned to work drained and grieving,
your kindness and patience sustained
me.
Yes indeed, I will miss you all. You
may all get older, but I am the living
museum of your youth, your young families,
and I wouldn’t trade it for anything
in the world.
Thank you for such a great privilege.
Your Friend and Pediatrician,
Laura Nathanson, MD
