American
Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) annouces
new information on SIDS sleep position
(October 2005)
The
American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP)
has announced a new policy statement
on infant sleeping. They have now stated
that infants should sleep on their
backs and NOT on their sides to reduce
the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome
(SIDS).
Bed sharing is not recommended. However,
there is growing evidence that room
sharing (infant sleeping in a crib
in parent’s bedroom) is associated
with a reduced risk of SIDS. The AAP
recommends a separate but proximate
sleeping environment.
The third area has to do with pacifier
use and studies showing that pacifier
use in the first year of life reduces
the risk of SIDS. They now recommend
the use of pacifiers at nap time and
bedtime throughout the first year of
life, however it should not be forced.
